So what is Body Image Coach? How does it work? Who is it for? These are all good questions so let's get them answered!
Body Image Coach is a full programme that teaches positive body image habits and beliefs as well as identifying and supporting those that are self loathing.
Self loathing may lead to mental health disorders, such as eating disorders, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, muscle disorder, as well as OCD, anxiety and depression. Body image difficulties usually start around puberty or before if we can teach positive habits and beliefs around body image early on. Pupils are less likely to build momentum on self loathing.
So how does this work?
Firstly, we offer a one free 1-hour workshop test video. This is pre-recorded and animated, with lots of cartoon characters, going through different scenarios that you would experience in real life. You can find the the free workshop video on Vimeo here.
We also offer further animated workshops that make up the full Body Image programme. There are six individual workshops and each workshop is one hour long. Please note, all six workshops combined create the full programme and they cannot be purchased separately. You will also receive a Journey Planner for pupils to work through as they watch their workshop.
The body image animated workshops are pre-recorded so that you can access and play them when it suits you. Each workshop comes with a Journey Planner for pupils to work through, these have exercises and discussions embedded so that staff members can pause the video in between discuss topics and take breaks when it suits.
We recommend delivering one workshop every one to two weeks. This gives your pupils a chance to digest a new way of thinking as well as getting the support they need if and when they need it. After each workshop, pupils will be given homework, which no one will see other than the Body Image Coach if someone needs one-on-one support.
By the end of their workshops, pupils will have a sound understanding of positive body image and how they can overcome self loathing and mental health difficulties.
Who is the programme for?
The free taster session is for ages 11+ and comes with a session plan available to download on the website here, (please see the bottom on the Home page).
The full programme suits ages 14+ in a school setting up until adulthood. Each workshop is targeted to a large audience, ideally a classroom setting. Peer support groups are no more than 10 people at one time, these must be within the same cohorts. In addition, we offer one-on-ones aimed at those needing extra support.
So why are we doing this?
How a person sees themselves plays a very important role and how they fit into society as well as how it affects their emotional states and at the core of self love in a lots of coping strategies. So that pupils can try and fit in so that they can be part of their community and feel safe and accepted. And that's all anybody wants.
Those from poor and challenging family backgrounds, and/or deprived areas, are more likely to struggle with their identity of who they are sometimes resulting in self loathing, and eating disorders, Body Dysmorphic Disorder or other mental health problems.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder currently affects one in 50 people in the UK. Eating Disorders currently affects 1.2 5 million people in the UK. Both disorders usually start around adolescence, and we want to reach out to those pupils that are struggling with their identity and their image. We want to give them a chance at healthy mindset future.
So what are the benefits to this programme?
Each pupil will have the chance to come away from self loathing. The programme is created by a former body dysmorphia disorder sufferer who is one of the Body Image Coaches running the session(s) also.
Workshops only needs to be purchased once a year and can be used time and time again. The only additional costs would be for coaching sessions and peer support groups if needed. Once you have the workshops in place, you can refer people as and when you need us.
We want to make our resources as affordable as possible, and so that you can use this programme for years to come. It is for this reason, you only pay for the workshops once a year, and this includes an electronic version of the Journey Planner booklets, the feedback forms, and the six workshop session plans.
